Everwhen Collective

Systemic Design

I am a founding member of a collective of strategists, designers, and makers focused on systemic change. We work as an emergent collaboration coalescing around meaningful projects. We focus on work that will lead us towards a freer, fairer, more regenerative and creative future. We draw on the timeless and timely knowledge and skills of our members who come from a wide range of cultures including First Nations. Contact me for more details.

Systemic Design

I am a founding director of Native Foodways. We are a systemic social enterprise strengthening the native food system in a way that is regenerative, culturally respectful, and benefits First Peoples. We're interested in collaborating with First Peoples, landowners, philanthropists, restauranteurs, agriculturalists, and volunteers who want to contribute to a native food future. Follow #nativefoodfuture on Instagram.

The Budderoo

Community

Systemic Design

My family and I have joined a cooperative community in Kangaroo Valley called Budderoo. We are a collective of custodians looking after and living on 365 acres of land. We joined as this met our need to develop a regenerative community or eco-village based on freedom, fairness, belonging, affordability, and sustainability. We are still new and still learning but we believe this community is a special place where we can live our values, most importantly, respecting First Peoples and nature. We want it to be an example that encourages others to start meaningful and regenerative communities.

Past Projects

Impact Measurement and Evaluation

I worked with the AFSE team and Fellows to co-design and implement an impact and evaluation framework for the $100m project. This included a cycle of surveys, conversations, workshops, analysis, reporting, and dialoguing. It was framed as understanding, articulating, and amplifying impact. It focused on being Indigenous-led, decolonising, relational, values-driven, principle-based, and utilisation focused.

I worked with the team at NCIE to turn a $500,000 collaboration with the Telstra Foundation into a $5million partnership. I developed the relationship with our partner and designed and wrote the proposal for our ambitious vision for Indigenous digital excellence (IDX). Once we had established the partnership, I drove the creation of the IDX team.

Social Enterprise Design

I worked with Arilla's CEO Shelley Reys for over two years to develop Arilla Digital as a new enterprise. We co-designed the initial learning product with key representatives from Lend Lease, KPMG, and Herbert Smith Freehills. This project involved enterprise design, financial modelling, pitch development, script editing, film production, website development, marketing, learning design, and an impact evaluation framework. We pre-sold the product for $400,000 to our first client and shortly after Arrilla Digital was bought by KPMG for an undisclosed amount. It was launched by the Prime Minister of Australia in 2016.

Program and Learning Design

I worked with the AFSE team to develop a program and learning experience along with its supporting digital infrastructure. My role was consulting on the development of the overall arc of learning and major curriculum themes. We utilised Slack, Hivebrite, Canvas, Zoom, and G Suite to run the online aspects of the program.

Social Enterprise Design

Together with Leanne Townsend we designed and ran Flashpoint Labs for five years. During this time we reached over 200 participants and employed six professional and six apprentice photographers. We earned over $10,000 a month working with clients such as ING Direct, Westpac, and QBE. We designed and ran changemaking participatory photography programs and created paid work experience opportunities with young people. Flashpoint Labs, now driven by Tomasz Machnik, continues to deliver photography services, programs, and job opportunities across Australia.

Film Production

That's me driving a Toyota i-Road. I was the stunt driver. This was a creative job producing a piece of branded content for The Discovery Channel. I worked with Directors Novemba to produce three pieces of content promoting the use of the sustainable transport alternative. You can view the videos here, here, and here (this last one is about the social impact of the i-Road). We worked with the amazing natural history presenter Liz Bonnin.

Community Organising

I worked with the team to recruited an Indigenous Field Leader in very state and territory. We worked together to then recruit and train hundreds of volunteers who had thousands of persuasion conversations about recognising First Peoples in the constitution and eliminating racism. I also wrote the program logic for a successful grant proposal which brought in $1.2million to support our work.

Theory of Change and Program Logic

As a consultant, I worked with the team to develop a Theory of Change and Program Logic for their Career Fit Program. This supported the team to gain alignment on program goals, activities, and outcomes. It also aided learning design and session development.

I redeveloped the How to Make a Difference workshop and facilitated it with 150 people over ten sessions. It was a three-hour workshop run on a workday evening from 6pm-9pm. It covered the why, how, and what of making change. The workshop is based on the book How to Make a Difference by John Paul Flintoff.

I recruited and worked with a team to design and deliver the Indigenous Digital Excellence Summit. This was a $250,000 event that brought together 40 Indigenous people engaged in the technology industry from all over Australia. It culminated in a pitch night with over 100 technology industry insiders. There was a 98% satisfaction rating with the conference and all pitched ideas were offered funding.

Facilitation and Engagement

Prior to becoming Australia Remade, the initiative was know as A24. During the early branding phase I facilitated some workshops around naming and advised on engagement.

Experience Design

As an early backer and then initial long term user, along with my partner Ella, we stress tested the tiny home for two months in Sydney in 2017. We then took custodianship of the home in 2019 and lived in it for four months in Kangaroo Valley.

We are now working with Indigenous Crisis Response and Recovery (ICRR) to provide the tiny home to community members impacted by the bushfires.

We coined the hashtag #IndigenousX which generated millions of impressions in its first week and has gone on to become one of the most used hashtags on Black Twitter. It has became @IndigenousX which is now a rotating twitter account, organisation, and column in the Guardian.

I also worked with the team to redevelop the NCIE brand and to ensure deep engagement with its essence.

I co-designed and organised the Indigenous Innovation Unconference. This was attended by over 100 people and feature the speakers pictured above: Jason Glanville, Rhianna Patrick, Lindon Coombes, Shelley Reys, Carla McGrath, Charles Prouse, Tanya Hosch, Ruth McCausland, and Luke Person.

I worked with a digital design firm and a group of young Indigenous people to co-design the Community of Excellence. It was a custom built Indigenous Youth Empowerment Social Network. It had over 1,000 members from across the country. Including a number Indigenous role models who connected with the young people to encourage them to pursue their goals.
